IBL Response To Attacks on UCU General Secretary.

To challenge policy and process is legitimate and core to the democratic agency of our trade union.

What is not acceptable, however, is the making of unfounded allegations regarding the integrity of our General Secretary and in particular, suggestions of collusion.

We are trade unionists. As such we spend much of our time defending our colleagues from false comment and criticism and bullying behaviours. And we ourselves must do better than this. We ourselves cannot and must not behave in this way.

The ballot is a democratic choice – yes or no. If no – then it is back to the drawing board and there indeed will be revisions made.

The choice is democratic and the choice is academic.

What is the alternative to this democratic process is, as has been suggested by Kent and Exeter branches, a power vacuum – which is what there would be if resignations were forced. How would that help? Divide and rule and UUK will have won the day.

This battle is with the employer – it is not with the officers of our trade union.
